Machine Control: Activity 3.1.1 Inputs and Outputs

1. Examine the wire diagram on the mini switch and describe how the diagram relates to the concepts of normally open and normally closed.
---

2. If computers only understand digital signals, then how is a computer able to interpret the analog signals coming from the interface?
---

3. Why does resistance decrease as the NTC Resistor becomes warmer?

Less is More

If "elegance" in design is doing more with less, how will the New Balance 890 accomplish this?
.
---Less is definitely more when is comes to running shoes. You want a comfortable shoe that doesn't slow you down. So one must try to cut as much weight as possible without sacrificing practicality.

.
---For example they tried to find a new foam for their midsole that wouldn't sacrifice feel or durability. They also found a way to reduce the cushion in the tongue without the comfort being affected. They even changed the laces in order to make the pressure on the tongue more comfortable.
.
---So these small changes make a huge noticable difference. The designers took a very smart route in designing this shoe. They first thought of what they were trying to accomplish. They then designed each piece of the shoe individually so that it was as light and praticle as possible. They then scetched the shoe and placed all the pieces that they designed together to form the shoe. The look that they went for is what they thought runners outside of the shoe-designing industry would want their shoe to look like.

Flowcharting 3.2.1

1. How is flowcharting similar to using a map to plan a route for a trip? Flowcharting is similar to using a map to plan a route for a trip because it lays out the moves that one is going to take from start to finish just like a map.

2. Describe a process that you perform every day. Develop a flowchart that illustrates the process.

Survival at Sea Game

This activity we were given a list of objects that we could have on a lost life raft in the middle of the ocean. We then had to list the objects in order of what we thought was the most important to the least important. Once we completed that we were the grouped up and we went back through the object and had to come up with another order that we could all agree on. Not to soon after we figured out what order the coast guard would put the objects in and why.

My Order :
25 liter container of water
- for hydration and longer survival
a case of army rations
- for food and longer survival
a shaving mirror
20 sq ft of opaque plastic sheeting
a sextant
a fishing kit
15ft nylon rope
mosquito netting
maps of pacific ocean
160 percent proof rum
small transistor radio
10 liter can of oil
a floating seat cushion
2 boxes of chocolate bars
- already have food more important things needed
a can of shark repellent
- you are in a life raft you aren't going to be facing any sharks

My Group's Order:
25 liter container of water
a case of army rations
a shaving mirror
a fishing kit
160 percent proof rum
15ft nylon rope
20 sq ft of opaque plastic sheeting
2 boxes of chocolate bars
10 liter can of oil
mosquito netting
map
a sextant
floating seat cushion
trasistor radio
shark repellent

We all had similar first and last orders

Expert's Order:
We had a lot of similar stuff. What we didn't expect is for the mirror to be more important than food and water. I think I would trust experimental data more than expert opinion because data is an actual testing of the situation

Tennis Ball Team Building Game

>What was the challenge?
---The challenge in this game was to have every member in our group touch the ball and have the ball returned to the starter person faster than our opposing group.
.
>What did your team come up with to solve the challenge?
---The plan our team came up with to solve this problem was we had everyone stand really close together and just held out our hands and we let the tennis ball role over our hands around the circle of group members fingers.
.
>How did the execution of your plan work out?
---Our execution of this plan worked out perfectly but we still tied the opposing group.

>What would you do the same and what would you differently?
---I would keep our main idea the same but I would change how we angled our hands because we didn't practice very much for it and that slowed down the balls speed. We worked as a team to come up with this plan because we all realized that the ball would finish quickly if the distance that needed to be traveled was shortest. After the constraint changed and we were no longer allowed to be touching the ball as the same time as our opposing team we made a slope of hands and had the starter person put a hand at the beginning and at the end.

>Did your team win or lose the game?
---We tied the first game and won the second challange.
